Starting Range: $28.00-$32.00 Per hour

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Competitive Sports Coordinator, the Head Coach for the SDSU Rowing team will be responsible for the following duties: planning and administration; design and implementation of varsity practice schedules and training schemes; assisting the novice coach with daily training schemes; coordination and submission of regatta entries; coordination of team travel; coordination of member recruitment and retention; alumni engagement; fiscal management; and the promotion and marketing of the rowing program. The position averages 20 hours per week and requires availability for morning, evening, and weekend hours, including home and away competitions.

The Rowing Head Coach is responsible for the enforcement of rules, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Sport Club Handbook as well as all duties associated with coaching a collegiate club program. The successful candidate will be expected to enforce and comply with all policies and procedures established by Associated Students/SDSU, the Sport Club Program, and Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) while serving as a positive role model for the program and SDSU.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Functions

Comply with all job expectations as outlined in the Associated Students/SDSU Sport Club Coaching Agreement
Ensure individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU and Aztec Recreation
Ensure safety of all team members, coaches and equipment is the top priority at all times
Represent the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all times
Meet all necessary training requirements put in place by the Mission Bay Aquatic Center staff including console driven outboards and water safety
Work collaboratively with team officers and administrators to develop and achieve program priorities
Design and implement varsity practice schedules and training schemes for both morning and afternoon practices
Create and distribute travel itineraries for home and away competitions
Produce aforementioned schedules and training schemes in a timely manner
Ensure that all coaches' launches are ready for use prior to the beginning of practice
Ensure scheduled practices begin and end on time
Be trained and prepared to drive a truck towing a 65 ft rowing trailer
Assist the team officers with fiscal management
Work with coaches from other programs to coordinate dual practices and meets
Submit regatta entries and setup travel arrangements
Transport necessary equipment to and from events
Perform necessary equipment maintenance and repairs
Submit launch usage hours and necessary repair reports to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center
Support the assistant coach/s in the achievement of novice and women's program
Assist with achieving team recruiting goals
Support fundraising efforts for ongoing operation of the rowing program
Maintain team's positive community standing
Coordinate special events with alumni and team (i.e. banquet, boat christenings, etc.)
Represent the team in regional or national meetings with other coaches or organizations
Performs other duties as assigned


Customer Service and Collaboration

Establishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departments
Represents the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all times
Maintains positive and effective working relationships with all athletes and staff


Safety

Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
Adheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe Practices
Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately


QUALIFICATIONS



Preferred Requirements Education:

Bachelor's Degree preferred


Experience:

Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies required
Knowledge Aztec Recreation website required
Knowledge and/or participation of Aztec Recreation programs and facilities preferred


License & Certification:

American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding (on-line courses are excluded)
Valid California Drivers' License and proof of automobile insurance are required
California Boater Card


Trainings:

Must complete Gender Awareness and Sexual Harassment Prevention training within 30 days of hire
Must complete the California Defensive Driving Course
Complete the Mission Bay Aquatic Center Safe Powerboat Handling Training
Attend all mandatory Aztec Recreation/Sport Club/MBAC Staff meetings and trainings as directed
Within the first year the candidate must obtain US Rowing Level 2 Coaching Certification if not already acquired

Must be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completion
Commitment to adhere to all the policies, rules, and regulations of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation and sport leagues


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Demonstrated commitment to student success and ability to recruit, train, and evaluate collegiate student athletes
Have a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadership
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumni
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected




RELATIONSHIPS:

Position reports to the Competitive Sports Coordinator. Further interactions may include Competitive Sport Assistant Director, Competitive Sports Supervisor, Student Leads, Athletic Trainers, MBAC Staff, and other Aztec Recreation office staff. Position interacts with full-time staff within Aztec Recreation, including, but not limited to Recreation Director, Associate Director, MBAC Assistant Director, and MBA Director. Team and coaches will share facilities and equipment with varsity athletics women's rowing

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: This is a part-time hourly position with a range of $28.00-$32.00 compensatory with experience.



A background check (including a criminal records check) and Live Scan must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered this position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.



MVR and DMV record review is required for positions that drive university vehicles and/or passengers for program related trips.
